Originally the Scandinavian choice, the multi-fuel stove, (able to burn logs and coal), is gaining popularity in the UK. They are more fuel efficient than an open fireplace as most of the heat is retained in the room , rather than escaping up the chimney. Also, because the fire is in a contained box, there is less concern about the fire 'spitting'.
